December Warms Up On Tropical Thai Island

Thai tourism goes from strength to strength with a full calendar of events attracting tourists from all walks of life and many different economic markets. The island of Phuket is key to the Thai appeal: a tropical paradise with the unusual benefit of easy mainland access via two bridges. With its white sandy beaches, lush tropical forests and endless skies, Phuket has 'tropical paradise' down to the high level set by Caribbean holidays. Phuket holidays also compare favourably with Mauritius holidays which offer a similarly Indian Ocean-based cultural appeal.

Among the brochure of Thailand holidays, Phuket is second only to Bangkok in name recognition, but probably superior to all other destinations in terms of reputation. An ideal destination for a winter getaway, December visits to Phuket coincide with some great December sporting events. If you're a serious athlete, you may be attending the Laguna Phuket triathlon which demands 1,800 metres swimming, 5.5 kilometres cycling and 12 kilometres running from participants. There's a much less grueling six kilometre fun run for anyone who wants to have a go (though book in advance to avoid disappointment).

There's also Phuket's Kings Cup Regatta, original a celebration for the King's 60th Birthday, now an internationally important sailing event with royal patronage. In its twenty fourth year, the Regatta attracts competitors from around the world and has grown to be the biggest and most popular in all of Asia. Trophies are given to winners, with many sub-categories for boats of various classes. Spectators and passers-by will have as much to enjoy on the water's edge as the yacht-owners on the waves. The races between multi-hulls and keel boats can be energetic and exciting, but there is also plenty to do on the harbourside if it fails to hold your attention.
